Young people from across Chicago will showcase their talents, creativity and leadership this month as Family Focus hosts its 3rd Annual Youth Explosion, an event organizers say reflects the importance of investing in safe spaces and opportunities for youth.

Set for April 11 at 2250 S. 49th St. in Cicero, the event will bring together students from the city’s South and West sides for an afternoon of performances, STEM displays, art, entrepreneurship and community celebration.

Youth Explosion will feature student performances, STEM projects, art, entrepreneurship and other creative showcases meant to reflect the talents and potential of young people in a positive, community-centered environment.

Family Focus, a Chicago-based nonprofit, serves children and teens ages 6 to 18 through out-of-school programming that includes homework help, STEM learning, visual and performing arts, sports, cultural enrichment and social-emotional support. The organization says its programs are rooted in the idea that children succeed when families and communities are also supported.

According to Family Focus, the organization served more than 19,600 people in fiscal year 2025, including nearly 6,900 families across Chicago and northeast Illinois. It also provided support services to more than 7,500 parents and caregivers.

The nonprofit says its youth programming has produced measurable outcomes. In fiscal year 2025, Family Focus served students from 15 schools across Chicagoland and provided more than 5,257 hours of after-school programming. Among participating families, 94% of parents reported improvements in their child’s social-emotional well-being, while 82% of after-school participants showed academic improvement and 70% of students increased their attendance rate.

Organizers say those results point to the growing importance of youth development and after-school programming, particularly in communities facing violence, instability and limited resources. They say safe, supportive spaces for youth are increasingly essential to helping young people build confidence, stay engaged in school and imagine broader possibilities for their futures.

The event is open to the community, and organizers are encouraging families, residents and supporters to attend and celebrate the accomplishments of local youth.
