Giannoulias Accepting Nominations for the 2023 John Lewis Youth Leadership Award

Published on

The Office of the Illinois Secretary of State is now accepting applications for the 2023 John Lewis Youth Leadership Award. The award seeks to commemorate the efforts of young Illinoisans who have demonstrated exceptional civic contributions to their communities.

The John Lewis Leadership Award, established by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) in 2021, aims to honor the impact and extraordinary accomplishments of Congressman John Lewis. Throughout his career as a U.S. Representative, Lewis strongly advocated for voting rights and consistently encouraged young people to actively participate in the democratic process.

“I’m excited to announce that for the first time, in partnership with NASS, Illinois will present the John Lewis Youth Leadership Award to young Illinoisans who are carrying on the mission and legacy of the late Congressman,” said Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. “This is an opportunity to encourage our youth to advocate for civil rights, democracy and equality. I encourage residents to nominate a young Illinois leader who has made a notable impact in their community.”

The influence of the John Lewis Youth Leadership Award extends far beyond the recipients themselves. By acknowledging and celebrating youth activism, the award inspires other young individuals to get involved and make a difference in their communities. It sends a powerful message that age is not a barrier to creating change and that every voice matters in shaping the future of our nation.

Any member of the public can nominate a young Illinois leader, whether they are a coworker, neighbor, parent, fellow volunteer or community member.

Eligibility Requirement
The recipient must be between the ages of 18-25 at the time of the award presentation on Jan. 10, 2024.
The recipient, in formal or informal roles, demonstrates empathy, the ability to influence others and the courage to confront challenges. As a leader, they work with their community by involving community members in decision-making, keeping them informed and/or ensuring they are an active part of the nominee’s work.
The recipient advocates for civil and human rights, such as the right to vote, fair access to resources and opportunities, and freedom from discrimination and prejudice.
The recipient helps individuals and/or groups in their community by: increasing awareness of problems; identifying and promoting solutions; increasing access to basic needs including food, education, healthcare, voting, transportation or employment; and increasing social connections and feelings of belonging.

Nominations are currently being accepted through December 20, 2023. The nomination form is available here. Awards will be presented January 10, 2024.
