In the early spring of 2011, while taking a rest from a cold bike ride, David Goodrich wandered into a museum. There, he was handed a large brass ring that was once a slave collar.
It reminded him of something he knew: one of his ancestors was a ship’s captain in the “Triangle Trade.” Holding the collar, and acknowledging that “white folks like” him have different ties to slavery than do Black Americans, he yearned to “discover how some… [African] descendants later brought themselves to freedom.

Joliet Central Wrestler Qualifies for State
Joliet Central sophomore wrestler Charles Walker qualified for the IHSA Boys Wrestling State Meet at the 220lbs weight class last weekend. Walker is coached by Pat McGovern, George Hiler, Larry Pennuto, Stan Whiting, Keandre Wiley, and Christian Smith. The IHSA State Meet takes place February 16-18 at the State Farm Center in Champaign.
Diocese of Joliet seeking applicants for anti-poverty grants
Applicant organizations or parishes may request grants of up to $3,500, and their initiatives must focus on at least one of the seven corporal works of mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned and bury the dead.
Medicaid changes could leave hundreds of thousands uninsured
“At the state level, we estimate a total of roughly 384,000 will lose coverage because we believe in doing everything, we can to help eligible Medicaid customers keep their benefits,” DHFS spokesperson Jamie Munks said in an email.
