Business means jobs and officials from the Will County Center for Economic Development (CED) understand that in a big way. The CED is geared up to present its Annual Report to Investors on Friday, Dec. 3 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club. “We’re really excited about this year. This is the first time our investors group, guests and friends are going to be meeting in person since March 2020. We’re really looking forward to that crowd interaction and getting a chance to get in front of people.” John Greuling, President and CEO of the CED said.

Parking in downtown Plainfield could get easier
Anyone who has been to downtown Plainfield knows parking is at a premium. Now with the holiday shopping on the horizon, the Plainfield Village Board is considering an intergovernmental agreement that would expand the existing north Des Plaines Street parking lot in the downtown corridor. Allen Persons, public works director, said in April 2020, a developer was considering the demolition of a property at 15024 S. Des Plaines St. and redevelopment of this site. This plan, he adds, included the expansion of the Des Plaines Street parking lot within property owned by the village, Plainfield Township and the developer. “Staff has been informed that this plan will not be moving forward as discussed in 2020,” Persons said Monday.
No changes in tax for Plainfield residents
During these times of uncertainty, at least one thing is not changing, a property tax increase for Plainfield resident’s next year.
The board on Monday reviewed the proposed 2021 tax levy calculations that maintains the 2020 overall levy rate of .4669. Based on preliminary equalized assessed valuation (EAV) estimates, the ordinance reflects a total property tax request of $7.75 million, according to Traci Pleckham, interim village administrator. However, the actual dollar amount the village will receive is anticipated to be less. She told the board the levy rate has remained unchanged for the past eight years.
No more snow days off from school?
Students can now say goodbye to snow days in the Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202, which serves students in Plainfield, Joliet, Romeoville and Bolingbrook, is doing away with snow days, thanks in part to the coronavirus pandemic. Associate Superintendent Dr. Glenn Wood said the “E-Learning Day” plan may be used when school is closed because of emergency or bad weather. He said District 202 had been slowly building its e-learning program before the pandemic shut down schools in March 2020. That work quickly accelerated in spring and summer 2020 as the district transitioned incrementally back to in-person learning in fall 2020 and winter and spring 2021. Now, e-learning is a normal part of the educational package, Wood said.
Technological advances, a silver lining for schools
Throughout the nation and here at home, school districts had to turn to the virtual world to bring classrooms to students during the COVID pandemic that raged on for more than 15 months. That meant students had to log in to computers and iPads from home to receive lessons from their teachers. It took some time to get the technology working properly for most school districts and some did not do so well. Much of the success was tied to how advanced each district was technologically and, unfortunately, whether the students could afford the technology, which involved internet access and a device.
