Unintended outcome when smoking while Black and Brown
Our experiences inform us that the implementation of a menthol ban will inevitably and undoubtedly create an increased number of stops, frisks, and interactions between law enforcement and members from Black and Brown communities. According to the Prison Policy Initiative, Black and Brown residents in the U.S. continue to have a long and troubled legacy of disproportionately larger numbers of police stops and interactions with the police. The proposed menthol ban will do nothing to quell this troubling reality.

Lyric Opera makes history with a greatly energized Tosca
A new Diva is born, in the person of Michelle Bradley, who channeled the most famous Tosca of all, Maria Callas, in the new-to-Lyric Opera Chicago’s presentation of one of Giacomo Puccini’s dramatic operas. This seamless presentation of his towering masterpiece runs through April 10th at the Civic Opera House. It is a must-see, not only for lovers of opera, but also for those whose love of liberty and freedom courses through their veins. It is a theme that dominated the evening.

IN MEMORIAM: Dr. Helen Chavis Othow Dies at 89
NNPA NEWSWIRE — Born April 21, 1932, in Oxford, North Carolina, Dr. Othow was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Chavis, Sr; a Prince Hall mason and superintendent of African American child-care institutions, and Elisabeth R. Chavis, a writer and public school teacher for 65 years.

African American COVID vaccine increases in Will County
Getting the word out to Blacks and Hispanics in Will County about the safety and efficacy of COVID vaccines has been a priority, according to county health department officials. A campaign involving reaching out to various community groups about the vaccine has been ongoing almost since the vaccines first became available. In March, the Illinois Department of Public Health reported 144,149 had received the COVID vaccine in Will County. Black people in Will County accounted for 9,685 (6.72 percent of the total population) vaccines and 3,180 (or 6.87 percent of the total population of Blacks) received both doses of the vaccine. Hispanics in Will County accounted for 15,009 (10.4 percent) and 4,488 (9.69 percent) of Hispanics received both doses of the vaccine, according to the IDPH.

When will Black Students’ Lives Really Matter in U.S. Public Schools?
NNPA NEWSWIRE — Black students report the highest percentage of racial bias incidents nationwide (CRDC, 2018) more than any other racial group of students. This reporting includes disproportionately higher rates of referrals to law enforcement and school arrests. However, these statistics rarely make national headlines. It’s no wonder that most folks haven’t heard about the August 31, 2021, at Valhalla High School in El Cajon. Where a 14-year-old African American experienced a similar physical restraint to that of the late George Floyd when a 5’11, nearly 208 lb. 51-year-old campus security supervisor placed his knee on her neck in an attempt to break up a fight.
