Thetimesweekly.com Project Acclaim has selected the National Hook Up of Black Women, Inc. Joliet Chapter (NHBW) to receive the 4th Quarter of 2021 Reverend James E. Allen Award for Service to the Community. This award recognizes individuals or organizations who show selfless devotion of community by direct action; perform actions that have a community-wide impact; perform actions that significantly improve the life or well-being of individuals; and perform actions that enhance the best interests of the community. The National Hook Up of Black Women initiatives and efforts in the greater Joliet area certainly match the criteria for this award. Project Acclaim was particularly moved by the NHBW’s efforts to promote literacy throughout our community by giving out free books at community events and making available after-school tutoring as well as the organization’s efforts to encourage vaccination against infection and the spread of COVID-19.

World dignitaries react to death of Bishop Desmond Tutu
Long before Nelson Mandela won his freedom from 27 years of imprisonment fighting apartheid in South Africa, Archbishop Desmond Tutu earned the moniker “the nation’s conscience.”
White and Black residents of the popular African nation lauded the bishop for his relentless fight to unite races and end the racist system of apartheid.
South Africa’s leading advocate for change and reconciliation under a Black majority rule and the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Bishop Tutu, died in Cape Town on December 26 at the age of 90.
Black business community mourns the passing of Harry C. Alford
President/CEO and Co-Founder of the National Black Chamber of Commerce (NBCC), Harry C. Alford, died Monday, Dec. 6, in Washington, DC. He was 73. Mr. Alford was preceded in death by his wife, Kay DeBow, Vice President and Co-Founder of the National Black Chamber. She died just five months ago.
Nearly $1.5M in educational scholarships to Black college students for 2022 open
TTW Staff Report The Executive Leadership Council (ELC), the pre-eminent membership organization committed to increasing the number of global Black executives in C-suites, on corporate boards and in global enterprises, will offer nearly $1.5 million in scholarships for Black undergraduate and graduate students in 2022. Forest Preserve's Black Road trail connection to Shorewood opens
A Forest Preserve District of Will County trail connection that stretches from Shorewood to Joliet along Black Road opened for public use on Friday, November 12, following a public ribbon cutting ceremony. The trail connection links the DuPage River Trail in Hammel Woods with the Rock Run Greenway Trail in Rock Run Preserve. The new path includes pedestrian bridges over the DuPage River and Interstate 55. The ribbon cutting was held on the DuPage River bridge portion of the trail connection.
“This bridge is going to increase the safety of walkers, runners and bikers,” said U.S. Rep Bill Foster. “… And it’s going to help everyone who is trying to get out on these trails to explore everything our region has to offer.”

African American COVID vaccine increases in Will County
Getting the word out to Blacks and Hispanics in Will County about the safety and efficacy of COVID vaccines has been a priority, according to county health department officials. A campaign involving reaching out to various community groups about the vaccine has been ongoing almost since the vaccines first became available. In March, the Illinois Department of Public Health reported 144,149 had received the COVID vaccine in Will County. Black people in Will County accounted for 9,685 (6.72 percent of the total population) vaccines and 3,180 (or 6.87 percent of the total population of Blacks) received both doses of the vaccine. Hispanics in Will County accounted for 15,009 (10.4 percent) and 4,488 (9.69 percent) of Hispanics received both doses of the vaccine, according to the IDPH.
