Homeowners push ahead in fight against truck stop
A plan to bring a largescale truck stop to the southwest corner of Interstate I-80 and Briggs Street in Joliet remains tied up in court despite it being previously approved in 2018 by the City Council – albeit by a somewhat slim majority vote at the time. A Will County Circuit Court Judge has yet to rule on the injunction filed against Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores on behalf of the Neighbors Opposed to Annexation of Parcels (N.O.A.P.) group in 2018. A hearing on the case is scheduled for January 19, 2022. A property at 1314 New Lenox Road, in unincorporated Joliet, which is owned by Jaquenette and Wesley Cottrell would need to be annexed into Joliet for the project to move forward. Both are members of N.O.A.P. and are apposed to annexing into Joliet. Jaquenette has launched a new website (www.neighborsopposedtoannexationofparcels.com) to keep residents and the community updated on progress to the proposed truck stop. Cottrell and other neighbors have been fighting the proposal since 2018.

Democrats, Republicans at odds over new district map
They argued over it and with little, if any, agreement across the aisle the Will County board voted along straight party lines in favor of a new 11-district map. The board voted 14-12 on the new 11-district map for 2022 that will result in two county board members per district and four less than there are now with the current 13-district map. Some Republicans on the board accused Democrats with “gerrymandering,” to get the map the way they wanted, which brought vehement disagreement from Democrats. Board member Jacqueline Traynere (D-Bolingbrook) said she got tired of hearing the “constant barrage of accusing us of gerrymandering. “This is about changes in our population,” Traynere said in support of the new map.

Obesity is also a leading risk factor for COVID-19; 78% of people who were hospitalized, placed on a ventilator, or died from the pandemic were overweight or living with obesity. Joliet officially on its way to getting Lake Michigan Water
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) this past Wednesday, Sept. 1st, issued an order granting the City of Joliet a Lake Michigan Water Allocation Permit. This permit allows Joliet to begin using Lake Michigan water as its source of supply in 2030 and establishes annual allocation amounts through the year 2050.
