Southeast water district receives $500,000 for repair to system
There were three Community Project Funding (CPF) requests made by the county that were included in the federal FY22 Omnibus Appropriations Bill. The $975,000 in federal funding request was approved and will support critical local needs, including upgrades to the Southeast Joliet Sanitary District, investment in a behavioral health workforce initiative, and supporting the county’s Opioid Overdose Intervention Program. The spending package was signed into law this week by President Joe Biden.

U.S. Depart. of Energy kicks off recruitment in support of bipartisan infrastructure law
Washington DC. – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced the launch of its Clean Energy Corps, which is made up of staff from more than a dozen offices across DOE – current staff and new hires – who will work together to research, develop, demonstrate, and deploy solutions to climate change.
DOE also announced that the Clean Energy Corps is ready to recruit an additional 1,000 employees using a special hiring authority included in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to help implement the Law’s historic infusion of $62 billion in funding and accelerate the nation’s drive to a clean energy future.
The Clean Energy Corps’ new hiring portal will help streamline the application process for the industry veterans, experienced technical experts, and the next generation of clean energy leaders it seeks to attract.

Northern Illinois Food Bank awards $454,000 in grants to improve access to food
Northern Illinois Food Bank awarded 18 grants totaling $453,864 to local food pantries and food assistance programs to give better access to food and other resources for neighbors in need.
For many recipients, the funding will go toward building out their infrastructure – purchasing vehicles, installing new equipment such as refrigerators or freezers, or expanding their facilities.

Warehouse Workers group want ‘community-driven solutions’ to water cost
A proposal to bring Lake Michigan water to Joliet via a pipeline from Chicago in the future has some balking at the projected high cost and who should bear the brunt of that cost. At a meeting on affordable water hosted by the Warehouse Workers for Justice at the Hartman Recreation Center, youth leaders from the group discussed what they believe are the root causes of the water crisis in the city and the rising costs of water due to aquifer depletion and outdated infrastructure.
