Celebrating 150: Birmingham, Ala., June 1, 1871-June 1, 2021

THE BIRMINGHAM TIMES – Later, Fred Shuttlesworth and other leaders of the Birmingham movement invited Martin Luther King Jr. to participate in a protest of segregated downtown businesses in 1963 that came to be known as the “Birmingham Campaign.” King was arrested during these demonstrations and wrote his famous “Letter from Birmingham Jail” as a response to an opinion piece by white ministers to end the protests.

House calls bring COVID-19 vaccine to homebound patients

BIRMINGHAM TIMES — So far, the House Calls program has vaccinated 30 patients and eligible caregivers and plans to administer up to 130 doses by mid-April. The program provides care to patients who cannot travel to their doctor’s office for appointments. The House Calls providers work together as part of an interdisciplinary team made up of a physician, nurse practitioners, medical assistants and a social worker.

It also has programs designed to support people reentering society from prison or rehabilitation facilities and those who have been out of work over a long period of time.
