Construction worker families on public assistance costing taxpayers $28B to subsidize worker abuse
Thetimesweekly.com A report just released by the University of California Berkeley Labor Center reveals that 39 percent of construction worker families nationwide are forced to enroll in one or more safety net programs to make ends meet. That is higher than the 31 percent of all workers enrolled in such programs. The yearly cost to state and federal governments is a staggering $28 billion. Additionally, 31 percent of construction workers lack health insurance coverage, compared to 10 percent of all workers. Researchers attribute their findings to low pay, wage theft and illegal employment practices in the construction industry.

Warehouse workers keep pressure on for corporations to pay more for Joliet water
Protestors from the Warehouse Workers for Justice gathered outside Joliet City Hall on Monday to keep the pressure on in advocating for clean, and affordable water now and in the future for all residents and to highlight the seriousness that warehouses and the corporations that own them pay more so residents can pay less. In late January of this year, the Joliet City Council voted unanimously in favor of a deal to obtain Lake Michigan Water from the City of Chicago by 2030. The new water source will cost the average user about $90 per month by 2030 and increase to about $143 by 2040, according to city officials. The city needs to find a new water source before the local aquifer it currently receives water from dries up.

To prevent further spread of COVID-19 and to protect the health and safety of Illinois’ youngest residents, Gov. JB Pritzker joined Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike, Department of Human Services Secretary Grace Hou, and Department of Childhood and Family Services Director Marc Smith Friday to announce new vaccination or weekly testing requirements for individuals who work in licensed day care centers.

A proposal to bring Lake Michigan water to Joliet via a pipeline from Chicago in the future has some balking at the projected high cost and who should bear the brunt of that cost. At a meeting on affordable water hosted by the Warehouse Workers for Justice at the Hartman Recreation Center, youth leaders from the group discussed what they believe are the root causes of the water crisis in the city and the rising costs of water due to aquifer depletion and outdated infrastructure.

Grant aims to address teacher shortage in early education
The Joliet Junior College Child Development (CDEV) program has received a grant from the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) to strengthen and diversify the early childhood workforce. JJC is the only community college in Illinois to receive this grant, which is funded by the federal Preschool Development Grant Birth through Five initiative, in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Early Childhood Development.
