Friulano grapes are famous for their role in the production of the white wines of Friuli, and this is an outstanding example.
Vigna Petrussa Friulano ($30), is quite unique. It has a great deal of character and balance that lifts it far above the norm. This is a hefty wine, which is unusual for a white wine. Its stone fruit character really stands out. Flavors of Meyer Lemon, dried apricots and hints of dried sage and oregano give way to a Ying and yang sensation of creamy richness combined with a tart aftertaste. Sushi or Sashimi with Wasabi and Ginger, Spicy Tuna Roll, Kung Pao Chicken or Pot Stickers sprinkled with Hoison Sauce are perfect pairings. Grilled fish or chicken with a spicy Mango or Mandarin Orange Sauce will make for a great lunch in the garden.
Situated in the heart of the Schioppettino wine region in the small village of Albana di Prepotto, Vigna Petrussa is known for its respect for the land and its careful handling of the grapes. Hand harvested, they are allowed to rest on drying racks, which allows their sugars and phenolic characters to become more concentrated.
Hilde Petrussa represents the third generation of female directors at the winery. Her use of traditional and modern winemaking techniques is legion in the territory. She ages their Friulano in the bottle for seven or eight months before releasing it in order to add more complexity to the wine. The proof of her success is in the drinking.
