Joliet Junior College is conducting multiple events in observance of Diversity Week and Latinx Heritage Month through mid-October.

Diversity Week events Oct. 4-8 are sponsored by the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Compliance, Office of Student Activities and the Center for Multicultural Access and Success. The offices have also partnered with student club Latinos Unidos and JJC’s Mental Health and Wellness program for events in observance of Latinx Heritage Month.

Topics will focus on diversity advocacy, individual wellness, and the Latinx perspective. It will also feature a presentation from Saul Flores, who embarked on the Walk of the Immigrants, a 5,328-mile walk across Latin America to raise awareness for immigration and education.

Wellness Series- Active Minds Speaker on Minority Mental Health

Guest speaker, Diana Chao, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at 13 and is a suicide attempt survivor and suicide loss survivor. Diana will share aspects of minority mental health from what it was like growing up below the poverty line with parents who didn’t speak English, to the power that even the smallest acts of kindness have had on her life. Latinx Perspective Series: The Political Image of Latinos in the U.S.
