Over 100 Gompers Junior High School staff members had a chance to sign the new gymnasium floor of the new school currently under construction on southwest corner of Briggs Street and Copperfield Avenue. The new school is being built next to the existing junior high school.

The 13,000 square-foot gymnasium is scheduled to open in August for students and staff to use while the rest of the school is being built. The current Gompers gymnasium currently sits in the footprint of part of the new school building and will be demolished this month. The new school will house approximately 700 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students when the new school is open in August of 2026.

Gompers Junior High Principal Raúl Gastón leaves his mark.

“It was exciting to have the Gompers staff leave their mark on the new school,” said Joliet Public Schools District 86 Superintendent Dr. Theresa Rouse, “They had fun deciding where to sign their names and walking around the massive gym.”

Gompers Teacher Christine Carlson lays down to sign her name.

Earlier in February over 200 sixth-grade Gompers students signed a beam that was installed in the new school. The current sixth grade students will be the first graduating class of Gompers Junior High in 2027.
