“Our 2022 award winners demonstrate the impact preservation has in our Illinois communities: it creates inspiring places where people want to live and visit, boosts jobs and economic activity and strengthens local pride,” said Bonnie McDonald, President & CEO of Landmarks Illinois.
During its 15 years of existence, Gallery Seven has hosted exhibits by individual artists and juried exhibitions showing the work of multiple local artists. The annual “Open Lens” exhibit has received entries from local photographers and those in other states and countries.
“Route 66 is famous all over the world and we are tremendously lucky that we can be a community situated along this legendary American attraction,” said Mayor John Noak. “We are proud to display the Route 66 sign and thank the State of Illinois and the Heritage Corridor Convention & Visitors Bureau for providing us with this marker.”

Founded by Joyce Dawkins of Lockport in 2017, the organization has 18 members committed to making a difference in their communities. She ROCKS It is an organization that hosts events designed to honor and empower women. She ROCKS It supports and acknowledges the success of women, promotes lifelong learning, supports non-profit organizations that help women live beyond their past and focus on rebuilding their future, and promotes relationship-building among women, networking, partnership, and volunteering, according to Dawkins.

The Well Versed Comedy, Gifts for Glory Ministries, Thrive Church, and the ROXY Event Venue brought two comedy shows in 2021 to benefit Royal Family Kids Camp (RFK) in Lockport, Ill., and were able to raise over $1600 to give towards the camps for children in the foster care system. This spring, the third show on April 29, benefitting RFK is going to be bigger with the addition of featured comedian Tracy DeGraaf, who will perform as well as Well Versed Comedy, according to organizers.
While it is known that food is a substantial part of Black culture, it is not widely known that Chicago Black Restaurant week was founded in 2015 by Lauran Smith, a member of the City of Chicago & Mayor’s Office with a specialty in social media management who wanted to promote the Black owned restaurants and eateries that populate Chicago.
The high cost of rent and fierce competition for vacant properties has led to an increase in rental fraud, with many people turning to online social media groups to find apartments, and some even sharing the cost of an apartment with friends or family.
